Rock legends and private jets go hand in hand, marking the high point of rock ‘n’ roll extravagance. Here’s how some iconic bands soared above the rest, transforming air travel into a personal hallmark of their stardom.

Back then, the rock scene wasn’t just about electrifying performances, chart-topping hits, and making a statement off-stage. Owning a private jet did just that—broadcasting success, wealth, and a touch of rebellion against the mundane. For these rock icons, the sky was not the limit; it was their playground.

Elvis Presley set the standard for rock and roll luxury when he purchased a 1958 Convair 880 in April 1975, naming it ‘Lisa Marie’ after his daughter. He invested over $800,000 in remodeling the jet into a flying mansion with lavish furnishings and state-of-the-art entertainment systems. This airborne palace reflected Elvis’s style and charisma, allowing him to travel with the same flair with which he performed.

English rock band Led Zeppelin used the aircraft for their 1973 and 1975 North American concert tours. Their Boeing 720B, bought for a hefty sum and refitted for nearly as much, became a flying symbol of rock excess. Complete with a bar, bedrooms, and an electric organ, the jet was as much a party hub as any of the venues they played at.

Initially borrowing Led Zeppelin’s famous jet for their 1975 tour, The Rolling Stones evolved their choice of aircraft as their tours grew in scale and extravagance. By 2014, they were using a custom-decorated Boeing 737-400. For the “No Filter Tour” in 2017, they upgraded again to a larger Boeing 767-300ER, distinguished by the iconic lips and band name. This aircraft was outfitted with 96 expansive first-class seats and a plush leather couch that converted into a bed, positioned at the forefront of the cabin for privacy and comfort.

Iron Maiden is one of heavy metal’s most recognizable bands worldwide. The British heavy metal band has taken a unique approach to touring by leasing aircraft from various airline companies. They used a Boeing 747-400 and a Boeing 757 for three tours, affectionately known as ‘Ed Force One.’ These jets not only transported the band, crew, and equipment but also became a symbol of Iron Maiden’s grand scale of operations and their commitment to reaching fans across the globe.
