Led Zeppelin was formed in London in 1968 and is usually credited with inventing heavy metal (this statement is understandable though not entirely true). Their scope was far wider than just being known as the inventor of whatever. The band wrote so many magnificent songs, they innovated in the sound on a large scale: never the drums, bass, guitar, and vocals were so powerful reunited together.
Back in 1968, they first appeared in the media as being a ‘hot new English group’ that ‘have signed a long-term exclusive recording contract with Atlantic Records’.
On the guitar a man who has a history with The Yardbirds, where he had succeeded Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck as lead guitarist – Jimmy Page; a bassist who has arranged hit records for Donovan and The Rolling Stones – John Paul Jones; a drummer well respected and already known by his notorious solos as a member of Tim Roses’s touring band – John Bonham; a reputed singer as ‘one of England’s outstanding young blues singers’ – Robert Plant.
So, what the world was expecting? Let me explain better:
- Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995, and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2006;
- American Music Award in 2005, and the Polar Music Prize in 2006;
- Led Zeppelin was the recipient of a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005, and four of their recordings have been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame;
- They have been awarded five Diamond albums, as well as fourteen Multi-Platinum, four Platinum, and one Gold album in the United States, while in the UK they have five Multi-Platinum, six Platinum, one Gold, and four Silver albums;
- Five of their albums among “The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time“, Rolling Stone named Led Zeppelin the 14th-greatest artist of all time in 2004;
- The band is ranked number one on VH1’s 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock, and Classic Rock’s “50 best live acts of all time”.
…. I rest my case!
