Boy George, A pioneer of the New Romantic Movement
Boy George is truly music legend – a solo singer songwriter, member of the group Culture Club, and DJ – he is available for bookings for performances worldwide through MN2S Music Booking Agency.
A pioneer of the New Romantic Movement, Boy George is not only a legendary singer but was also an iconic androgynous figure during the 1970s. Amassing worldwide sales of over 100 million singles and 50 million albums as a solo artist and as part of Culture Club, Boy George is still in high demand as a live act and DJ globally.
With his own distinctive style right from the very beginning of his musical career, it was inevitable that he would be noticed by big players in the music industry, and indeed, former Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren, asked Boy George to perform with the band Bow Wow Wow. Despite taking him up on the offer, Boy George’s time with the group didn’t last long before animosity with lead singer Annabella Lwin led him to pursue his own band with bassist Mikey Craig. The group ultimately came to be named Culture Club, due to the combination of the cross dressing Boy George, black British bassist Mikey Craig, Jewish drummer Jon Moss and the ethnically English guitarist Roy Hay.
The group released their debut album ‘Kissing To Be Clever’ in 1982 on Virgin Records in the UK and Epic Records in the US, having been rejected by EMI, and shot to number 5 in the UK and number 14 in the US. The album produced the single ‘Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?’ which became a worldwide hit reaching number 1 in countries all over the world.
Following up on this success, the group’s subsequent album ‘Colour By Numbers’ was an even bigger hit, reaching number 1 in the UK and number 2 in the US, and became known for its infamous single ‘Karma Chameleon’. Having set the bar high with the first two releases, the third album ‘Waking Up with the House on Fire’ did not perform quite as well, although did see significant success. The single from the album ‘The War Song’ hit number in the UK charts, and Boy George featured on the well-known Band Aid Christmas release, ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas’.
Culture Club came to an end in 1986 and it was revealed shortly afterwards that Boy George had entered into treatment for a drug addiction, but recovered well to release a solo album entitled ‘Sold’. The record was well received in the UK and Europe, and spawned the number 1 single ‘Everything I Own’. Having set up his own record label, More Protein, Boy George went on to release a collection of underground tracks under the moniker Jesus Loves You.
Although famed as one of the world’s best live performers, Boy George has made a name for himself as a DJ as well, debuting at the Planets Club in Piccadilly and subsequently being recognised by promoters Fantazia. He went on to produce a successful mix for them on the release ‘Fantazia: The House Collection 2’ and also put together a mix for an early Ministry of Sound CD which sold no less than 100,000 copies.
Having won battles with drugs, serving community service and spending time behind bars, Boy George is still an icon and a hugely popular live act. Having started his own house music imprint, VG Records, he has also collaborated with Mark Ronson, and released the album ‘Ordinary Alien’ in 2011. Boy George is available for bookings through MN2S Agency in London.
